Pele, An Absolute Legend

Born on October 23 of 1940 was only the beginning for this legend. Competing in the World Cup of 1958 and winning only at the age of 17 is insane to think about. He grew up in poverty, but that didn’t stop him to pursue his talent in soccer. Playing with a rolled up sock stuffed with rags around the streets of Bauru. It goes to show that anything is possible if you put your mind and dedication towards it.

Pele joined a youth team coached by Waldemar de Brito, a member of the Brazilian national team. He eventually pushed and convinced Pele’s family to let the the elite star leave home and try out for the Santos professional soccer club when he was 15. He immediately started practicing with the team. Pele scored the first professional goal of his career before he turned 16, led the league in goals his first season, and was recruited by the Brazilian National team. He was only 15 and all of this has happened during his time period. An absolute legend in the making and performing as an outstanding player in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.

He was officially introduced to the world in Sweden. Displaying remarkable speed, field vision, and technical ability. The 17 year old scored three goals in the 5-2 semifinal win against France, then conceded two more in the final. The score was 5-2 win over the host country. That’s insane to believe and even crazier to do. The young superstar received many offers shortly after to play for European clubs. Brazilian President Janio Quadros had Pele declared as a national treasure. The legend lives on.
