USA Shutout by Mexico in Friendly

September 6, 2019 Mexico defeated USA in a friendly match at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Javier Hernandez scored in the 21st minute, Erick Gutierrez scored in the 78th after just getting put into the game, yet Uriel Antuna taking advantage of USA and scoring making it 3-0 final score.

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez scores first goal 21st minute

Mexico had a plan to press the U.S and force balls that they can intercept. USA on the other hand was trying to break that press and counter attack to score against Mexico. They tried it for half the game and came to the realization that they had to switch it up and play long balls to get passed the midfield. This would allow them to break there press, but instead it just became more of a failure causing a turnover and Javier Hernandez scoring the 21st minute of the match.

Pulisic was the star for the U.S team in this match. He was showing himself as a leader and stepping up in the midfield position. He was transitioning the ball well and maintaining possession through out the match. Pulisic presented a moment of intelligence controlling the midfield and giving Weston a chance to make a run out wide. Weston passed the ball to Pulisic at the edge of the 18 yard box, but put a weak shot on target

In the second half the U.S attacking style wasn’t working efficiently and wasn’t leading to anything. Erick Gutierrez intercepted Steffens’s bad pass and scored making it 2-0. USA had a chance to regain confidence with a penalty, fouled by Jordan Morris, unfortunately Joshua Sargent missed the penalty. Overall the U.S had a 53% possession rate the whole game compared to Mexico’s 47%. Mexico had more shots from the bad passes they made, but still having the same shots on target. Both teams drew 17 fouls and 2 yellow cards.

The game ended 3-0. Mexico won dominating the U.S, but leaving their team devastated. The game before this was in the Gold Cup on July 7 of 2019. Mexico once more beat them 1-0. There Rivalry has been going on since May 24 of 1934. The U.S won that game, but they didn’t win another game against them until 1980. Since then they have been at it losing and winning some games. They have drawn 14 times out of the 73 games. Mexico has been dominating the U.S and consistently getting better.

In the World Cup of 2009, Mexico was showing their hate towards Landon Donovan by throwing trash at him while he was trying to take a corner kick. This was at Estadio (Stadium) Azteca in Mexico City on August 12. It was a qualifying match for the World Cup and it goes to show that Mexico does not respect the U.S team. In the upcoming World Cup of 2022 we will find out who will have a more superior team and dominate the qualifying rounds. Mexico should not get knocked out of round of 16 or there streak will keep going. They got knocked out of the round of 16 in 2018 by Brazil, but Mexico should be able to recover and improve their team to win the title 2022 World Cup Champions.
